Random MP3 Player to Play Songs in Winamp: Cyber-D’s RandoMP3

Posted: 29 Jun 2012 06:30 PM PDT

Cyber-D’s RandomMP3 is primarily used to randomly play songs from selected folders. The program plays these songs in Winamp. This is the 'Audition' tool of the software. Once the folder has been played, the user can choose whether to keep the songs, delete them or relocate them. The program comes with another tool – 'Charger'. This tool is used to sync files with Winamp on a flash drive or an mp3 player. Let's have a brief review of this program and see if it's any good.

Features of Random MP3 Player

As mentioned before, the program doesn't have a multitude of features to boast of. The ones worth a mention are as follows:

Audition tool: This tool is used to 'audition' the music files in a particular folder of the user's hard drive or music library. The songs are played using Winamp player. After the songs have been played, the user can choose whether to keep the songs in the same state or delete or relocate them. This can be useful in case of a cluttered collection. In case more files have been added to a particular folder, the program allows the user to re-scan the folder manually, or it is automatically done once all the songs in the selected folders have been played.

Shuffle: The software allows the shuffle option in Winamp to be changed from the program itself. It can be turned on or off in the user interface.

Charger tool: This tool is used to synchronize files between a portable music player or a flash drive and a computer. The synchronization is done using random songs or albums and does not repeat songs. This is achieved by maintaining a log of the files that have been copied to the device already.

Downloading and Installation

The software is not large by any means and is just over 2 MB in size. Downloading is, therefore, no hassle at all. Installation is a breeze too. The only downside is that the software can only play the songs in Winamp. If the user's machine doesn't have the player installed, the setup quits. The software worked smoothly on a Windows 7 system and should work well on older systems as well.

Working and interface

The interface is pretty basic and could do with some more attention to user interaction details. That said, the user interface is colorful. This shows a bias towards form over function. The software seems to work quite smoothly and once the root folder is chosen, it plays songs from one subfolder, followed by the next. In case the shuffle function is turned on, the songs are played randomly. If album art is available, it is shown in a small space on the UI.

Verdict

The program fills a niche that nobody was asking to be created. The latest generation music players have more than enough functionality and this program is quite simply, redundant. The charger tool is handy, but more often than not, synchronization includes a full wipe. Cyber-D's RandoMP3 could be done without, especially with better music players coming along every day.

Lightweight Music Player with Transparent Interface: Mcool

Posted: 29 Jun 2012 03:30 PM PDT

Mcool is a very lightweight music player which also has a very unique user interface. Unlike the majority of popular modern music players, Mcool’s interface is completely transparent with only a very thin white border being visible around it. The application also doesn’t have any menus, which might confuse some users after running Mcool player for the first time.

mcool default window
This would be the default window of the application, as you can see we really didn’t exaggerate when we said that the interface is very unique, if you can even see it. Spotting this tiny square might be a problem to those who are running the application for the first time. The fact that there’s a tray icon which you can see helps a lot in determining if the program is actually running or not, so you’ll know at least that :).

Similar software: Atomic Player, Tray music player, Tomahawk player

Mcool music player supported formats

For a small music player, Mcool packs a large list of music formats that can played by it:

  • MP3
  • Flac
  • WavPack
  • OGG
  • TTA
  • TAK
  • Musepack
  • AAC
  • Wav
  • AC3
  • WMA

and a lot more, some of which you probably never even heard of. The main thing that makes Mcool player stand out would be the amount of resources that are used when it plays, but we’ll get to that later. Before songs can be played we first have to figure out how to add songs to the playlist. Since there are no menus, at least no menus in the classical sense, then adding songs to the playlist might be problematic to some, here’s how you do it.

Playing songs in Mcool music player

The trick to adding songs to Mcool playlist is discovering that right click works when you click on the main window, the one that is transparent with only small white edging around it. Doing that will reveal a very small list of options, from which the most interesting one would be, if you want to add songs, the Add button. Clicking on it will reveal the following window:

mcool add folder url

Here we can see that there is even an option to play internet radio streams with the help of Mcool, but for now let’s just add a folder to our playlist. Everything works the same like with any other music player, select the folder where your songs are and click on the Add button, or in this case the green check mark. Songs should be listed in the transparent menu right away and you can start playing them by clicking on their names.

mcool right click options

This would be the right click menu that we mentioned a few lines back. Notice that next to the Add options there are also options for turning playlist on and off. Every folder that you open is considered as a playlist. You can add new ones, or turn them off completely and just look at the full song list.

Conclusion

I promised you to say a few words about resources, and here it is, the program only used 3MB of RAM, while being a very small burden on the CPU. If you have an older PC, then Mcool is definitely the music player for you, free download.

Manage your eBooks with Alfa eBooks Manager

Posted: 29 Jun 2012 12:30 PM PDT

Alfa eBooks Manager is another one of those programs who aren’t leaving a thing for the imagination and people know what the program does right after reading or hearing the program’s name. So yes, Alfa eBooks Manager is a free program that you can use in order to manage your electronic book collection. Program is feature rich, so much so that it might even intimidate some with the sheer amount of options that it offers, but if you decide to stick with Alfa eBooks Manager, you’re gonna end up with the ultimate eBook management tool on your hands, which is definitely worth the effort of figuring out how to use it.

Alfa eBooks default window

Program interface is intuitively divided into two columns, the most important one of which would be the one on the right side where you are presented with books that you have in your collection. Books can be displayed in several different types of “shelves”, you can choose between 13 different types of shelve templates, from the standard ones, where you only have book thumbnails displayed, to the more advanced ones which actually have wooden book cabinets simulated, like the one that you see above.

Adding books and collection management in Alfa eBooks Manager

Collections can be created, edited and saved as databases. Each collection can be regarded as a database, so you can actually run several digital book collections at once. When you first start the program you’ll be asked if you want to start a new database, open an existing or if you would like to open a template database which is what you can see on the image above. When you start a new book collection this is what you’ll see:

Alfa eBooks empty add books

I pointed out the two main options that you can use in order to add books to your collection. First one would be manual addition where you can add books individually to the collection. Second option which makes life easier would be the Scan for books option where you can select a folder which will be deleted and from which, if found, books will be added automatically.

Add books from Amazon, Barns & Noble and Google Books

With Alfa eBooks Manager you can add books from the famous online book sites, like Amazon, Google Books and Barns and Noble. To do this select Add from web and search for books in the window that appears:

Alfa eBooks web search

What kind of formats does Alfa eBooks Manager support?

Program supports pretty much all the eBook formats that are out there, it even supports audio book formats, be careful when you’re scanning for books, the program might load your music collection as books;). Some of the supported formats would be:

  • LRF
  • PDF
  • DJVU
  • FB2
  • CHM
  • MP3
  • MOBI

Program usage and conclusions

It might take a few moments to find your way around Alfa eBooks Manager, but the same is true for every program out there. All in all this is a great tool, there are also paid versions where you can import Google Libraries, update author image directly from Google search and more, check the main site for more info. The free version should be more than enough, try that first.

Free Media Player with Online Radio and TV Shows Streaming: Dj Genius

Posted: 29 Jun 2012 05:00 AM PDT

Dj Genius is a simple light weight media player. With Dj Genius you can play most of your favourite audio and video formats, listen to online radio and stream online TV shows.

Installation of this free media player

The installation was quite uneventful. While the installer took sometime before indicating any progress, it had none of the adware that plagues free software. The installer also required a running installation of .NET framework and recommended an update of the existing installation.

Features of this free media player

The main feature of the program is the media player. Dj Genius is capable of playing both media in mp3 and mp4 formats but I have to point out the range of formats it could play was greatly limited. It relied on third party software, K-Lite Codec pack in particular to extend its range of supported file formats.

The recording feature on Dj Genius allows users to record and edit audio in both ID3v1 and ID3v2 formats. This features allows for editing of crucial track information.

The audio library allows you to add mp3 files for playing. The audio library requires you to select audio files you want added instead of the software automatically searching and adding media from preselected folders.

On the plus side, Dj Genius had an inbuilt social network hub which for some reasons assumed I was on Twitter- which I was not. I was not able to get the hub on my Facebook page. The social network hub was bundled with a Dj Store which directed users to Amazon’s website which you can change on the settings module.

image

The radio module which allows online radio listening was easier to use and allowed me to easily add custom online radio frequencies. The module provided quite a variety of radio stations and all played with no problems.

Dj Genius however lacked some of the most basic features of a basic media player. For one it did not support drag and drop which I found very inconvenient. Secondly I could not get it to play a single file without adding it to the media library. It also lacked critical player controls like the repeat and shuffle functions for the playlist. I was stuck to playing my playlist in a sequence which was not very desirable. The equalizer and visualizations were not present either.

Light weight players are very popular and Dj Genius is one of those. However, its performance left very little to be desired. It actually went unresponsive after I added about 4000 files to the library.

How to use it

The user interface although very simple was not very well organised. Instead of the typical menu at the top of the application, you get a status bar which indicates the name and bitrate of the current playing file. Audio files can be added  from the plus sign at the bottom of the interface- this could have been placed at the top of the interface. The interface is divided into three section, the toolbar on the right, track information at the top middle and audio library files at the bottom middle. Media player controls are at the bottom of the interface. They dared to be different on the volume control which I doubt did the player any justice. The twitter button to the left of the add button opens the twitter page on the player.

image

The radio module can be accessed by clicking the radio button. First time use requires to load channels by clicking the large icon at the centre of the interface. New channels can be added by clicking on its respective button at the left corner of the radio interface.
