Free Desktop Client for Amazon Glacier: FastGlacier

Posted: 27 Aug 2012 11:55 PM PDT

FastGlacier is a free desktop client for Amazon Glacier. It lets you upload files to Amazon Glacier, create vaults, delete vaults, see vault properties, and much more. It supports large files upload, up to 40 TB in size! And it is completely free.

Amazon Glacier was launched recently. This is a super low cost online data storage and data archival service that lets you store data online for as low as 1 cent per GB. However, Amazon AWS console does not gives any option to upload or download files from Amazon Glacier. For that, API has to be used programmatically in your applications.

FastGlacier is probably the first desktop client for Amazon Glacier that is out there. It lets you do pretty much everything with Amazon Glacier that you need to do. However, it is still very new and some kinks need to be worked out.

How to Use this Desktop Client for Amazon Glacier

It is quite easy to use FastGlacier, as the interface is quite intuitive. It is actually quite similar to S3 Browser, which is no surprise as it comes from the same company. Just download FastGlacier, and install it. Download size is less than 2 MB, so it should be quick.

Once you have installed FastGlacier, you need to configure your Amazon Glacier account details in that. For that, either you need to have already signed up with Amazon Glacier, or you can go to the sign-up link from within the program.

FastGlacier_AddAccount

In the Add Account screen, give a name for your Amazon Glacier account (you can choose any name), add a comment if you want to, and provide your Amazon Glacier Access Key and Security Access Key (available in AWS Console via Add Users). You can also add password protection to your account, so that if someone tries to access the account via this desktop client for Amazon Glacier, they will be prompted for password. I strongly recommend this.

Once you have added an account, you will be taken to main window of FastGlacier that lets you do bulk of whatever you want to do with Amazon Glacier. It has a section on left that shows all your vaults, section on right shows files that are present in selected vault, and section at bottom shows the operation that you are currently carrying out in this Amazon Glacier desktop client.

FastGlacier_MainWindow

Amazon Glacier stores data in vaults (consider them same as "folders" on your computer). They are equivalent of buckets in Amazon S3. If you have not added a vault ill now, that is the first thing you want to do. For that, click on "New" on the Left hand side. Do notice there is a small drop-down titled "Region" at the bottom of Vault pane. If you want to create a vault in a specific region, do select the region from here first, before clicking on New button to create vault. The vault will be created in the region that you select here (I am yet to figure out how to change region for a vault once created; and if it is even possible at all).

FastGlacier_AddVault

Once you have added a vault, it will show up in FastGlacier window. You can right click on the vault to see its properties (they will show up in bottom window).

Once the vault is created, next thing you want to do is upload some files to your Amazon Glacier account via this cool desktop client (isn't that really why we signed up with Amazon Glacier in first place). So, let's get started with that.

How to Upload Files to Amazon Glacier

To add file to your Amazon Glacier, just select any vault name, and click on "Upload button". Then you can select any file that you want to upload in your Amazon Glacier account. As I mentioned earlier, it supports really big file size, so you can just upload all your files together in form of one big zip archive.

I tried file upload process in FastGlacier with a small word document. However, it didn't turn out to be as seamless as I had thought. The transfer process was interrupted many times in between and I had to restart it. Ultimately it did succeed after 5-6 tries. But I won't criticize FastGlacier a lot for that; it is still quite new. I am sure developers must already be working frantically to make this Amazon Glacier desktop client even more stable.

Once the file is uploaded, you won't be immediately able to see it in your vault because of the way Amazon Glacier works. You need to request inventory of the vault to see the files present in it. And the first request can be submitted only 24 hours after the first upload.

Some other features of FastGlacier Desktop Client for Amazon Glacier

  • Completely free for personal non-commercial use. Paid upgrade available for commercial use.
  • Support multi-part uploads.
  • You can pause and resume upload process at any time.
  • You can configure bandwidth limits via Option screen, so that it does not uses up all your bandwidth during upload process.
  • Supports very large files, up to 40 TB in size. This is the same as upper limit of Amazon Glacier.
  • You can queue multiple files for upload, without waiting for a file to finish uploading. So, if you have hundreds of file, you can just queue 'em all, and forget it.
  • You can even upload a whole folder.
  • You can configure multiple Amazon Glacier accounts.
  • You can specify a proxy for uploads.
  • Apart from bandwidth throttling, you can also specify maximum number of concurrent uploads.
  • Quite easy to use.

Verdict:

Since the time Amazon launched Glacier, I had been itching to try it out, and had been eagerly awaiting for first desktop client of Amazon Glacier to be out. FastGlacier came out much sooner than I had anticipated, and it didn't disappoint me at all. The interface is quite polished and easy to use. Vault creation process worked like a charm. I love the fact that I can configure multiple Amazon Glacier accounts with it, and individually password protect them. The only glitch was the file upload process, which frankly is the most important operation it is supposed to perform. However, I have high hopes from FastGlacier, and really hope that developers fix this soon.

Do try out FastGlacier and share your experience in comments. And if you know some other desktop client for Amazon Glacier, do let us know about that too.

Linxy App is a free iPhone app to search word meaning through iPhone camera. This iPhone app is truly a nice app which lets you take a picture of any word in a physical book or newspaper, and then it searches for its meaning on internet.

Recently we wrote about OCR feature of Google Translate app for Android. Linxy app brings similar OCR capability to iOS.

Now, the concept of the app is simple. You just have to launch the app on your iPhone and focus your iPhone camera to the word for which you want to search the meaning. Now, the app identifies the word and search the meaning of the focused word. You will then see the pop-up below on your iPhone screen containing the meaning of the word. I really liked the app as it made your work easier.

Linxy

Linxy app makes efficient use of your iPhone camera apart from taking pictures and recording video. The app works good when you search for the meaning of the word written on a piece of paper, book, or any other medium. But when you scan and search for the word meaning from your computer screen, the app finds it a bit difficult. You can fix the difficulty by making the font size bigger. Make the font size bigger and the app will easily identify the word and search for the appropriate meaning from its smart English word dictionary.

How To Use Linxy And Search Word Meaning:

Step 1: Download and install Linxy app.

Step 2: Launch the app.

Step 3: Focus your iPhone camera to the word for which you want to search the meaning.

Step 4: You will see a pop-up showing the word meaning.

Linxy Popup

Step 5: Tap on the pause button to let the app freeze and let you read the meaning of the word.

Features Of Linxy App:

  • Search word meaning through iPhone camera.
  • Searches the meaning from inbuilt dictionary.
  • Works offline.
  • Flash light button provided depending on the device supportability.
    Linxy options
  • Zoom in and zoom out feature.
  • Play/pause word meaning search.

Online Music Downloader and Player: GetMP3

Posted: 27 Aug 2012 03:30 PM PDT

GetMP3 is a free internet music downloader, but it’s not only that, with GetMP3 you can listen to songs before they are downloaded, so it’s also a free online music player. Note that the sources from where this song downloader gets its music might not be entirely legal, check the laws in your country and download songs at your own risk.

GetMP3 default window

Interface of GetMP3 is very simple, like you can see from the image above. Large empty area which can be seen below the upper toolbar, where it says that there are no songs, that’s where the music that you search for is gonna be listed. Before songs can be listened and downloaded, you have to search for them, and that’s the first thing that you have to do in order to play and download songs with GetMP3.

Similar software: Grooveshark Downloader, music2pc, MusicFrost.

How to listen and download songs with GetMP3

GetMP3 is still in beta, so you might come across an error or two when you use it, if you do try to contact the developer with an error report. Next to being a beta, this free music downloader is also a standalone application which doesn’t have to be installed.

GetMP3 song search

To start a song search, enter either a song title or an artist name in the top left input field. Right next to the first input field, there’s another one called More results, where you can also specify a song name like we did on the image above.

GetMP3 song list

Clicking enter will start the search and you should see results in a couple of moments. Next to each song you should see artist name, song title, duration and the most important ones, the Listen and download columns where you can select to either listen or download the song that you’re interested in. Down below you can see that we have one song in the download queue, and next to being downloaded, the song is also being played.

When the download completes, all that’s left for you to do is to simply open up the download directory, which you’ll need to setup when you first start GetMP3, and in there find your song, or songs if you decided to download several. If you want you can even add songs for from several different performers in the download queue, but to do that you’re gonna have to conduct another search.

Conclusion

Listening to songs online is a great way of how you can see if they are any good before actually spending your cash on buying the album. For those who can, if the song isn’t copyrighted, or if copyright laws are not very strict in your country, you can also download music from the internet, the one that you find and like. There’s no installation, like we already mentioned, simply download GetMP3, run it find all the songs that you want to download and then simply select what you wanna do, listen or download, and GetMP3 will do that for you, for free.

Currently is a free Chrome extension which can be used to display the current date and time, weather forecast in a much attractive manner. This free Google Chrome extension gets added to your chrome and displays all the details once you open a new tab. The software would display the current date, time, weather details, geographic location of the place you are using the computer from in the entire new window. For example if you are living in the city of Kolkata as the details of that particular city would get displayed.

The process for installing this free Google Chrome extension on your system is same as any other extension which you would have downloaded on your chrome browser. Once you have it to open you need to add the extension to your chrome and rest would be taken care of by the browser itself. In order to launch the extension and see all the details you just need to click on the new tab option and a new black screen will appear. Besides launching the new tab you need not do much to use the software and see the details. Once you have the new tab open in front of you the window will display the current time in the large fonts in the HH:MM:SS format. Below that you would notice the current date which would be much smaller compared to the fonts above. At the bottom you have the bigger icon saying ”now” which represents the current temperature of the location you are from. Next to that you have the forecast for the weather of today and the next three days. By default you have all the options for the current location you are accessing the computer from. However the software gives you the option to set your home location of some other place as well.

It's pretty much what the free Chrome extension has on offer for you, whereby to access the controls and settings of the software you need to click on the settings icon available at the bottom of the tab. Doing so opens up the settings panel with all the available options on it. The settings window gives you the following options:

Posted: 27 Aug 2012 11:00 AM PDT

Mouse Wrangler is a free mouse gesture application which you can use to record and execute mouse gestures on your Windows operating system. Users of the Opera web browser already have something similar available for them to enjoy, only it’s limited for work within the browser itself, you can’t use them to run commands and applications on Windows, if you want to do that, use mouse gestures on Windows, you need mouse gesture utilities like Mouse Wrangler.

Mouse Wrangler default window

What you see on the image above is the gesture list where you’re gonna see the list of created gestures, which can be created by clicking on the New Gesture button in the top right corner of the screen. Next to this one, there’s another settings window where you can additionally tweak Mouse Wrangle, change settings like enabling screen drawing when doing gestures, adjust the gesture activation length, speed and other smaller tweaks. Features that Mouse Wrangler has are:

  • Setting mouse movements for gestures – up, down, left, right
  • Assigning single or multiple keystrokes is also possible

You can activate a certain keystroke, like for example Ctrl+Alt+Del or you can set the program to open an application or a file, like an image or a song.

Mouse Wrangler ran program

Gestures can be activated by holding down the right mouse button, and then doing the mouse movement that was saved, make sure to do it precisely. Posted: 27 Aug 2012 09:30 AM PDT

BrowsingHistory View is a free software which displays browsing history. Unique features of this freeware is that it can display the browsing history of four browsers together. These browsers are: Internet Explorer (version 4.00 and higher), Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox (version 3.00 and higher), and Apple Safari.

Also check our review on free Browser Cleaner to clean browsing history of all the browsers on your PC together.

I would have really loved an option in this to delete browsing history for specific websites, as I have to use a separate Firefox plugin for that.

View Browsing History from remote computer:

You can read the browsing history from a remote computer in your network if you have a read access to the user profiles on  that computer.

  • Choosing the "Load history data from specified profiles folder" option will load the browsing history of the all the user profiles on a remote computer.

You can find "HTML Report – All items" and "HTML Report – Selected items" options in the view menu of BrowsingHistory View which can export the selected item or all the items in the history table as an HTML file.

Another way to export the browsing history is to use the Command Line Prompt. Various command line options are available for exporting these files. I am listing some of the main commands here; for more options, you may refer the website.

Command Line Options:

  • /stext <Filename>: This option will save the history data into a text file.

  • /sort <Column>: This option will sort a specified column.

Apart from the above listed options, BrowsingHistory view also offers some other useful commands which you can refer to from its website link. You will get a brief description of commands and some useful examples there.

Language Options in BrowsingHistory View:

BrowsingHistory view supports six more languages other than English. These languages include: Brazilian Portuguese, Dutch, German, Italian, Romanian, and Russian. You can find links to download separate zip files for each language on the website. Follow these easy steps to change the language of your BrowsingHistory view software:

  • Download the zip file of the desired language.
  • Extract the "browsinghistoryview_lng.ini" file.
  • Put it in the same folder where your BrowsingHistory View.exe is placed.

Using BrowsingHistory View is a nice way to view your browser's history. This not only lets you view the history of four different browsers together, but also allows you to view browsing history from the remote computer; that too with an option to export the history into different files.

From all of the 10 alarm apps above, I recommend you to download and install "Alarm Clock Xtreme" app.

Download Contra Free for PC

Contra is a popular Shooting and Action TV Video Game. This contra game can be installed and played on your PC for Free.

As mentioned earlier in my previous article "Play Contra Online": the Online version is harder than original Version. So, I searched in the internet and found this original version that lets you download Contra for PC. The Contra for Android is an exact replica of Original Contra Game.

History of Contra Game:

Contra is a two man team of the Special Elite Forces. Their names are Lance and Bill known as Mad Dog and Scorpion respectively. They are sent into the Jungle to destroy the Alien Forces led by Red Falcon. There are 8 zones of Red Falcon defense. At the end of each zone: you have to destroy the sensors to proceed to next zone. This Game was a hit back in 1987. IGN awarded it the "Toughest Game To Beat" and Nintendo named it "One of the Best Multiplayer Game". Its popularity prompted the developers to create another version called Super Contra, which I already covered in my article titled Download Super Contra for PC.

Gameplay and tactics:

You are provided with a standard Machine Gun (M). You can shoot at Flying Capsules and Sensor Pill Boxes to upgrade your weapons. The different guns available are Laser (L), Spread Gun (S), Rapid Fire (R), and Force Field (F). My personal favorite is the Spread Gun. Keep shooting your enemies while jumping to escape their bullets. Don’t be afraid to jump into the water because you can swim too.

This game supports two players also. You can choose two players by pressing  Shift button. Enter for start or pause. The controls for two players are:

  • 1 Player: Press Ctrl to Shoot, Spacebar to Jump. Arrow keys for directions.
  • 2 Players: First player can use same controls as 1 Player. The second player has to use [Q] for shooting and [W] for Jumping. The directions are [C] for left, [B] for right, [F] for up and [V] for down.

(You can check the controls by pressing Esc and then choose Options tab, Click on the Input option)

The game generally begins with 3 life's. However we tried the following cheat to increase the number of life's to 30: During the titles Press Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, Ctrl, Spacebar and Enter.

In this Free Contra game we can save at any point of our game by simply pressing F5. Those saved files can be loaded by pressing F7.

So, Destroy the Aliens and Trespass the highly secured zones.

Enjoy your Game @Download contra game for PC.
