Against the wall

Introduction to this Free Logic Game:

In the first scene of the game you will be standing on a small platform (as seen in the below screenshot). You see an infinite wall which is comprised of irregular sized bricks and a magic stick. Point your magic stick at the bricks, they get highlighted. Click at the highlighted bricks and they start coming out. If pressed second time on the same bricks, they go back inside. So, by clicking on these bricks you make stairways or roads and make your way to the top by jumping or walking on them. The keyboard controls are W, A, S, D for directions and SPACE for jump. F5 Quick Saves and F9 Quick Loads the Game.

Different colored bricks does different functions:

  • White bricks perform normally i.e., they come out up to some distance
  • Red bricks won't respond to your magic at all
  • Brown bricks come out a little distance only
  • Green bricks are tricky; as soon as you climb on them they start going back into wall and make you fall.

If you skip or jump into an open area you start falling down and a message says “You Died”. Then you can start playing from your last checkpoint by choosing the “Continue” option from the Main Menu.

Find Songs By Singing and Humming with Midomi

Posted: 22 Aug 2012 03:30 PM PDT

Midomi is a website where users can come, use their microphone to hum or sing songs which they’ve heard on the radio, but who’s names they didn’t quite catch, after which Midomi is gonna scan its database, compare what you’ve sang or hummed with actual song patterns and it’s gonna give you the song title. Most of us have found ourselves in situations where we’re singing a song in our head, but we just don’t know the song name, with Midomi, you can easily search for a song, based only on your ability to hum the melody.

Midomi default window

Using Midomi is relatively straightforward process, when you open up the main website, you’re gonna see what can be seen on the image above. To start your search just click on the Click and Sing or Hum button, which can be seen on the image above. By doing that you’re gonna activate the recorder which is when it’s time to start singing.

Also check out allsongsby to search and listen to all songs by an artist.

How to find out song names with Midomi

Once that the recorder has been activated and it’s running, you’ll have to do your best and sing the song that you’re looking for as accurately as possible into the microphone. Before that, make sure that all the microphone settings are properly configured, people often have their mic muted or volume turned all the way down which makes the song identification process difficult. The length of your singing also plays a very important role, next to clarity of course, because it can be difficult to detect something if you only sing the melody for a few seconds. If you’re unlucky you’re gonna see something like this when you click stop on the recording:

Midomi no close matches

This is the results page if your search didn’t end up with a definitive match, you’re then gonna see several suggestions which are close matches to what you were singing. This will probably be seen by majority of people. All those who are capable of singing the songs that they are interested well, they’re gonna see something like this:

Midomi song found

If your singing and humming was matched with a song in the Midomi database with absolute certainty, you’re gonna see what can be seen on the image above. In both situations you’re gonna be able to listen to a song excerpt, you’ll be able to do that for all the songs from the album, to make sure that it really is what you were looking for, or to see if you maybe like the entire album.

You can also check out Shazam Android app to identify songs.

Conclusion

Finding songs when only a bit of melody is familiar is never and easy thing. With Midomi looking for songs is made easier. Just click on the search button, start singing or humming and Midomi is gonna do the rest, compare what it recorded with its rather large database of songs and it’s gonna display the results where you’re gonna know if a song is a 100% match or if there’s several similar results, all of them will be displayed for you to choose from. To use Midomi you just need to open up the website.

What Is IRC?

Posted: 22 Aug 2012 09:30 AM PDT

If you have heard the term IRC many times, but always used to wonder “What is IRC?“, this article should answer that. This article contains all the necessary information that you need to get started with IRC.

Whenever people come across this strange looking term “IRC“, their first reaction is: “what is irc?”. People who know little about it think that its dead but I would like to surprise them that’s its still very much alive and kicking.

To summarize quickly, IRC (Internet Relay Chat) is the internet’s first chat network. This came into being much before today’s instant chat messengers did. And it is still not dead; hundreds of thousands of people can be online on IRC chat networks at any point in time. There are thousands of Channels (chat rooms) which are still populated by thousands of people.

command line interface of irc

Yes, its has been replaced by host of other services and its has gone from being a common, mainstream application for online communication to somewhat unknown and a seldom used tool. But even after all these years of advancement it still remains active. This shows that this technology serves a specific purpose which for now cannot be replaced and most probably will continue to be operational in the decades to come.

What purpose does IRC hold in today’s world of social networking, instant messaging, push emails, chat networks, video calling etc.? To explain what is IRC?, we have to travel back a few decades to the birth of IRC. And see why is it still in use and is relevant even after so many advances in computing.

I think this article is gonna be quite long. So, I have added an Index of content so that you can quickly jump to any part. If you have no clue about IRC, I encourage you to go through the complete article. Get a cup of coffee, relax on your couch, and just be amazed by this amazing invention which probably ensured internet is as popular as it is today.

Content

1 What is IRC

2 Technical Information

2.1 Client / Server Model
2.2 Commands

3 Popular IRC Clients

3.1 Desktop client
3.2 Android client
3.3 iOS client

1 What is IRC :

Internet Relay Chat ( IRC ) was born in August 1988 to replace Bulletin board system(BBS). The protocol was created in Finland by Jarkko Oikarinen. IRC was once the most popular method of online communication and is now replaced by other more modern ones.

IRC is a chat protocol that is used to power various chat networks. Chat networks powered by IRC are known as IRC themselves. Unlike chat networks like Yahoo Messenger or Facebook, IRC is highly decentralized in nature, and not controlled by a single company. Anyone can setup a IRC server on decade old hardware. And there are literally hundreds of IRC clients available for every possible platform (Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iOS, web based, and much more).

Even though popularity of IRC has been dwindling, but still IRC holds relevance because most of software, hardware communities, and some forums (especially open source and hacking communities) use it for providing a sort of informal support of their products, discussing amongst themselves, and in general helping out the users.

With this part we have ended “What is IRC?

2 Technical Information:

Now that we know What is IRC, let’s dive a little into technical aspects about it. I won't be going in too much detail. But would like to give enough information so that you have a good understanding about its architecture and know enough commands so that you can even work on an application that does not have a GUI. Feel free to refill your coffee cup.

2.1 Client / Server Model:

IRC is a multichannel, multiuser, real time chatting system which uses a client – server architecture. It also offers the ability to transfer files from one user to the other. The chat rooms here are called Channels and one to one communication is called Private Messaging.

To use IRC services we require an IRC client software to connect to a IRC server. There are lots of graphical clients available for free but earlier you had a command line interface and used to manually type commands to perform any action. Anyway the commands still hold some use which I will explain in detail in a while.

There are thousands of servers which cater to different categories. The server part of the IRC is easy to implement and way easier to maintain. To find appropriate channel you can look through many different server-lists.

Best thing about Chatting on IRC is that you don't have go through the process of registering etc., all you have to do is enter a channel and choose a nickname and you can start chatting.

2.2 IRC Commands:

These days all the IRC clients are GUI based and you can point and click your way through the interface. But there are some things which are done better and faster using commands. So here is quick guide to most of the basic commands that you might want to know as a client. However, it is possible to do everything without using any command. So, if you don’t want to bother yourself with technical jargon, feel free to jump this section.

The commands are to be entered in the text field where you would normally enter text to chat but with a forward slash prefixed for example ( /Command ). See screen shot below.

irc_command

Connecting to a server:

Every server is known by a hostname. Lets take an example of DALnet its Hostname is irc.dal.net. Just type the /server followed by the Hostname.
Example:
/SERVER irc.dal.net
This would connect you to the Server.

Finding channels:

Now your connected to the sever which provides you with channels. To get the List of channels available on the server type /List. This will return you the list of all the channels available on the server with the details of each channel like Name, Users, Topic.
Example:
/LIST

Connecting to a channel:

Once you have the channel name, all you have to do to connect to it is type /join followed by the channel name. If the channel exists you will be connected to it otherwise a channel will be created with the same name.

Example:
/JOIN #MyIRC888
Because this channel does not exists it will be created and you will become its operator.

Getting list of names of people in a channel:

Once you are connected to a network it will show all the user names if you are using a GUI application. If you are using a command line application then just type /names followed by the channel name.
Example:
/NAME #MyIRC888

Other useful command is to use /whois followed by the name of the person who's details you want to get.
Example:
/WHOIS fire88

If you want to change your nick name try the command below.

Example:
/Nick MyNewNickName

Now your nickname will be changed to "MyNewNickName".
Setting your status to away and quitting:

Away:

Want you explain why you will be not available for a while type /away followed by your message .
Example:
/AWAY writing a long article on What is IRC, back in 15 days

When you get back just type /AWAY

Quitting:

There are two methods of quitting: quit and leave. Quitting will exit IRC, while leaving is meant for exiting for a channel.
To quit just type /quit followed by your message which is optional.
Example:
/QUIT Woo Hoo! Article done. Need to get drunk now!

To just leave a specific channel type /leave followed by the channel name .

Example:
/LEAVE #MyIRC888
Starting a private conversation:

To initiate a conversation with someone use /msg command .
Example:
let the persons nick name be Friend to whom you want to send a private message and interact with in this whole example.
/MSG Friend what's sup ??
if you are using a GUI application (which most probably would be the case) then some of those would open a conversation window with other person, like most of the modern chat messengers do. These windows are known as a query window. Now to send a private message if query window did not open would become a cumbersome because you would have to type /msg again and again . Here is when /query command comes in. If you want to open up a separate query window then type /query followed by the persons nick name.
Example:
/QUERY friend hey, how is your day going .

Direct Client Communication(DDC):
If the server is having a problems and lagging etc., then you can bypass the IRC server and continue having a private chat with the person. For this you will need to use DDC command.
Example:
Start DDC:
/DDC CHAT friend
then you can send messages using the /msg command as shown above.
End DDC:
/DDC CLOSE CHAT friend

File Transfer on IRC:
To transfer a file we use the same DDC command but with different arguments. To start a transfer use /ddc send. Then the person will get a notification and if he accepts if then the transfer will occur.

Example:
/DDC SEND friend C:\Users\Icrus\Desktop\test.txt

Depending on the client he/she will get a notification. If it's a GUI application then a dialog box will open up where he/she has to accept the file in order to get it. Else he will get a text saying that I have sent a file using DDC.

To accept is via command he/she has to type the following
/DDC GET yourNickname.

For Further Exploration :

Use help command for further exploration. Just type /help will bring up a list of all the commands that can used are displayed in an alphabetically arranged order.

Example:
/HELP

To get more specific information on a command that your are interested in type the command you are interested in front of /help .

Example:
/HELP SERVER

Extras:

If you are interested in knowing about more commands (including commands for server operations and channel maintains etc.) then read this Article.
Want to setup your own IRC server then follow this amazing tutorial.

DAO4Sync Docs Edition is a free application which is gonna create a virtual drive for Google Docs, so that they can be accessed seamlessly when you’re using your PC, just like you would any other location on your system. This free Google Drive desktop client only works on Vista, Windows 7 and 8, so all those who are using older versions of Windows are either gonna have to upgrade or look for alternatives.

What you see on the image above is Windows Explorer with our Google Docs files opened within it. In the background you can see a Google Docs account and as we are creating documents on our computer, they are also being simultaneously updated and showed on our Google Docs account online. DAO4Sync isn’t very difficult to use, and the application isn’t very large, very small amount of computer resources is necessary for it to work.

Similar software: inSync, Joukuu, Gspace.

How to use Google Docs account as a virtual drive

A lot of people are using Google Docs where they have easy access and editing of important documents, spreadsheets and presentations available. With Google Docs, it doesn’t matter where you are in the world, to access important files all that you need is an internet connection. Not only that you can access your files, but you can also edit them, which makes Google Docs even more useful. However sometimes, for some reason like additional editing functions, users would like to open their online documents locally in Office or its free alternatives LibreOffice or OpenOffice. Normally in these types of situations you’d have to export your files from Google Docs, save them to your computer and then open with the program of your choosing, but now with DAO4Sync Docs Edition you can open and edit them directly online.

Configuring this free Google Docs desktop client isn’t very difficult, after installation, it gonna start running in the system tray, and a popup window is gonna ask you to assign a drive letter for the virtual drive that’s gonna represent Google Docs drive. It’s possible to select it later by right clicking on the system tray icon and selecting Options:

This would be the main configuration window of DAO4Sync, and this is where you’ll be making the majority of changes. Most important thing that you need to do here would be selecting the drive letter if you haven’t when you started DAO4Sync for the first time. After that you’re gonna see an additional partition when you open up My Computer, like you can see on the image above, this means that you can right click on the tray icon again and then on Logon, to enter your Google account login details, so that your files will become visible inside that virtual drive.
