Google Translate is a popular translation service of Google, and it comes with a nice free Android translation app as well. Google Translate App for Android is very effective in easily doing translation from one language to another on Android. We have already done a complete review of Google Translate app for Android.

Now Google has added OCR feature to Google Translate Android app. The new OCR update of Google Translate app has made it more useful and impressive in terms of translating different languages.

Now you can translate any text by just taking its picture from your Android camera. Let’s say you visit a foreign country, and come across road signs in a language that you don’t understand; or see a restaurant menu in a different language. You can just take a photo of them, and translate that text via Google Translate app of Android.

Apart from new OCR update, the app also has multiple other features which lets you manage the app in a better way. You can also use text to speech which is also another way to keep typing of content away. Just speak the content which you want to translate and the app will identify and translate the content automatically.

The handwriting option of the app is another nice part. Instead of typing using the device keyboard, just write the content in your own handwriting and the app will convert the text written into the desired language.

How To Use New OCR Update In Google Translate:

Step 1: Download and Install Google Translate app from Google Play Store.

Step 2: Launch the app and select the desires languages.

Step 3: You will see the new camera button below in the options bar. Tap on the camera button.

Free Automatic Image Geotagger: Atom GPS

Posted: 14 Aug 2012 03:30 PM PDT

Atom GPS is a free automatic geotagging application which is gonna automatically add geotaggs to your photos by using information about your whereabouts from your GPS log files. Geotagging is the practice of adding location information of where an image was taken to the image EXIF metadata, which would be a part of the image where information like time and date of creation is stored. With geotagging images can be viewed and sorted based on the location where they were taken, which can at times be very useful.

ATOM GPS default window

To use Atom GPS you’re gonna have to have a GPS device, a camera, obviously, and a computer to which you’ll be able to connect them both. All the major GPS devices are supported, their log file types are supported, and a lot of the cameras are also supported, the RAW camera format which means that you don’t have to process photos before using them inside Atom GPS. Next to being able to add geotaggs to photos, Atom GPS can also:

  • Upload images to Google Earth, Google Maps, Panoramio, LOCR or Flickr
  • Open common (JPEG, PNG), and RAW (Fuji, Minolta, Olympus) formats
  • Give you preview of geotagged photos
  • Add geotaggs to entire image collections at once

Geotagging usually takes a long time, because you have to do it manually for each photos, look at it, figure out where it was taken and then write in the correct geotag information. Now with Atom GPS you can easily tag entire collections at once.

How to automatically geotagg photos with Atom GPS

After you’ve come back from the trip where you’ve made photos with your camera, take your GPS device and connect it to the computer. Search for travel logs, where all of the information about where you were is gonna be stored, with time stamps, make sure that your clock is set correctly, on both your camera and your GPS. After you’ve finished with the GPS do the same with camera, only with the camera we’re extracting images. Next open up Atom and load both images and logs into the program:

ATOM GPS loading image GPS

On the left side you need to open up the image collections to which you want to add geotags, and on the right open up the GPS logs. When you’ve done that, all that’s left to do is to click on the Write data button. By comparing time stamps on both images and GPS logs, Atom can figure out where you’ve been when a certain photo was taken, and it will simply add the location written inside the GPS logs to the photo metadata.

Conclusion

Like we already mentioned manually adding geotags can be very tiring, but with Atom GPS all that’s in the past. If you decide to create automatic geotags with Atom, make sure that you check if your GPS device is supported, majority of them are, but it doesn’t hurt to check and be sure. Perhaps the best feature of Atom would be the fact that it’s free, so if your looking for an automatic photo geotagger, Atom is the thing you need.

Automatically Beautify Photos: aaphoto

Posted: 14 Aug 2012 12:30 PM PDT

Did you ever feel that your photo is not looking as good as you want it to be? There is something missing in it? Might be the color or contrast? you want to make it perfect but you don't know how to use all those professional and complex free photo editing software. Now you don't need to get disappointed anymore. Since what we are going to talk about, is a very simple and easy to use photo beautification software which automatically makes corrections in the color levels of your photo, and makes it look great.

aaphoto is a free and open source software to beautify photos by adjusting the colors and size of an image. You don't need to bother about different things you need to do in order to correct the color balance of your photo. aaphoto does everything to make your picture looks color perfect; and that too with just one click (one right click, to be more precise).

aaphoto color adjustment

How to Beautify Photos with aaPhoto:

Once you install aaphoto, you will not see aaphoto in your program list if you try to search for it. This automatic photo beautification software runs either through the command prompt or through the context menu option of the image.

The easiest way to beautify photos is to use context menu option of aaphoto. I was so amazed when I saw this feature. No need to start any application, open files, do changes, or save them to folders. This amazing software does all this in just a single mouse click.

Once you install aaphoto, you will see a new option, "Auto Adjust Photo", in the context menu of your photos. This option will come once you right click on the supported image types. Once you click this option, aaphoto will create a new, modified copy of the image and save it by appending "_new" to the name of your file. This copy will be saved in the same folder where your original photo was located. aaphoto will adjust color, brightness, etc. of the original photo to create this new version, and the new photo would probably look better than the original photo.

aaphoto new file creation

aaphoto automatically analyzes your photo and make corrections in contrast, color balance, saturation, and gamma levels. The good point is that this software does not gives you a plethora of options to struggle with, just to make your photo look beautiful. Rather, it appears as a single command given through a mouse click.

Do note that aaphoto might not work in some cases, depending on the color conditions of your photo. In those cases, you might have to go with some full featured software like FreeFotoWorks, FotoWall or Funny Photo Maker.

Apart from context menu option, aaphoto can also be run through command prompt. Though I did try to run it from the command prompt, it didn't work out for me. Still if you want to try it yourself, you can do this by giving the software name and filename (with extension, for example aaphoto MyPic.jpg) as input. You can also give the resize parameter but that should be less than or equal to the original size of the image.

Image Format Support

jpg, png, mif, bmp, res, jp2, pnm/ pgm/ ppm, jpc

OS Support

Windows, Linux

How to install aaphoto?

aaphoto can be downloaded from the website log69.com. You will see download links for Windows, as well as different distributions of Linux (Linux, FreeBSD, Debian). Just download the installation file for your OS, and install it. And then check out your right click menu to see option of “Auto Adjust Photo”. Of course, this option will come only if you right click on one of the file formats I mentioned above.

aaphoto is one of the easiest to use photo beautification software, and surprisingly, the results were quite nice. It has an intelligent algorithm which makes appropriate fixes. So, if you are looking for quick tweaking of your photos, do check out this free photo beautification software.

Track Windows Registry Changes with RegFromApp

Posted: 14 Aug 2012 11:00 AM PDT

RegFromApp is a free system utility which is gonna monitor changes made to the registry by applications that are working on your system. Not only will it going to monitor changes, but it’s also gonna allow you to create registry backups of the entries that the application tampers with, after every change is made, so that you can easily roll back a particular registry entry to its previous state. Feature like this is very useful if you for example are interested in running an application that you don’t trust and it turns out you were right for being suspicious.

RegFromApp default window

On the image above we can see RegFromApp working, its monitoring Windows Explorer, and every time that we do something, open a folder or a document, we are gonna see entries changing in the RegFromApp main area. Application works like a media player, notice in the top left corner that there are even play and stop buttons, that’s where you can either start of stop RegFromApp from monitoring the selected application.

Similar software: Registry Monitor.

How to monitor registry changes made by an application with RegFromApp

RegFromApp doesn’t require installation, just download the application, extract it and run it. After you do that, you should see this window:

RegFromApp process selection

This is a list of currently running applications on your system. Yours will of course be different, it will gonna be populated with applications which you have installed and which are working on your system. RegFromApp is basically gonna scan the currently active processes which you can see in the Task Manager, and show them in the process selection window which you can see on the image above. Select the applications that you are interested in tracking after which you’ll probably be greeted by an empty window, something like this:

RegFromApp empty window

The reason why there aren’t any kind of data showed on the window above is because the application that we selected isn’t active. That’s another thing that you need to take note of, if the selected application is actually working or not, if it’s only sleeping and not doing any kind of changes to the registry, because in that case, if there aren’t any changes made to the registry, RegFromApp has nothing to detect.

After the application becomes active, you should see something very similar to what you can see on the image above. Every change will cause the list to refresh with new registry data which the application made, and you’ll be able to stop monitoring after that or save the file so that the affected registry entries can be restored to the way that they were before.

Conclusion

RegFromApp is perfect for all those who are interested in keeping track of what applications are doing to registry entries. Using it is not very difficult, the application is very simple, just select the process that you are interested in monitoring and wait for the data to start showing in RegFromApp. Red square in the left top corner means that process is being monitored, but it’s not active, so don’t think that RegFromApp isn’t working if nothing is being displayed. Application is free, make sure to give it a spin.

Exercise Break Reminder Software: Lazy Ass

Posted: 14 Aug 2012 09:30 AM PDT

Lazy Ass is a free desktop tool to remind you to take a exercise break at regular intervals while working on the computer. A major percentage of us spends a large amount of time not doing any physical activity. This can be attributed mostly to long hours in front of the computer and then being too tired to hit the gym. This program is aimed at those very people who don't get much physical activity.

Features of this exercise break reminder software:

The program is designed to remind the user at a specific interval to get away from the computer and do one of many exercises or tasks that it can choose. The program takes control of the computer for a whole minute so that the user can't just cancel the notification and get back to doing whatever he was doing before.

  • Selectable activities: The program allows the user to select or deselect a particular task. If a person is physically unable to do a particular activity then he/she can deselect it.
  • Research-based activities: The activities available within the program are not randomly chosen. Instead, they are based on proper research, according to the program's developer. Our bodies are designed to work at specific intervals; not doing the requisite work leads to a number of problems, some of which might be very serious.
  • Disabling: If a person is feeling particularly lazy on a particular day or is sick, the program can be disabled from the settings. This feature is very useful for those lazy weekend mornings.

Downloading and Installation:

The program is quite small in size; just under 300 kb. Installation is quite simple as well. The program runs on all versions of Windows from XP upwards. It also requires a version of the .NET framework that is more recent than version 2. If all this sounds a bit difficult to digest, rest assured that if your computer has been bought within the last 5 years, the program will run without a problem.

You can also check out eye exercise software while working on computers.

Working and interface:

Honestly, this program doesn't have an interface to talk about. When you click on the program on your desktop or in the Start Menu, an icon appears in the notification area of the desktop. Right-clicking on it opens a small menu showing the various activities that the program will ask the user to do. By default, all the exercises are selected. A user can choose to deselect some if he/she so wishes. Other options include an about button which takes the user to the website of the developer. The program can also be enabled or disabled using the same menu. The program works simply enough, so there are no glitches to report.

Also check out rest break free software to remind you to takes regular rest breaks while working.

Verdict:

Lazy Ass is a simple, yet effective one. However, the motivation to exercise will not come from a simple computer program. If one wishes to get off their butt and work out, they will. Otherwise, they simply won't. The developer needs to be lauded for such an innovative effort, but people who are lazy will not change due to a computer program.

Free Text Editor to Decorate Text: Amorphous with Pixie Dust

Posted: 14 Aug 2012 05:00 AM PDT

Amorphous with Pixie Dust is a free text editor from Jay Monk Developers, which allows the user to intermix different accents and characters in creative and interesting ways thus enhancing the visual appearance of the text. In other words, it provides means by which the user can decorate the text for their blogs, e-mails and instant messages.

Features of this text editor

Amorphous With Pixie Dust provides us four special effects with the help of which you can decorate your text.

The effects are as follows   :

  • Normal
  • CaRTooN CaPS
  • CaMeL cApS
  • RanDoM capS

The above four effects add variety to the letter case thus enhancing its visual appeal. In other words it decides which letter is to be kept in Upper Case and which in Lower Case.

The other additional effects are

  • Pixie Dust
  • Wide Space
  • Rotate-13

Pixie Dust applies dust like appearance to the text whereas Wide Space adds a blank space after each letter in the given text.

Rotate-13 also known as ROT-13  follows a certain algorithm or cipher which "rotates" or advances a letter in the alphabet 13 places to the right ('B' becomes 'O' and 'O' becomes 'B'). It follows a cyclic pattern ( after ..X, Y, Z comes A, B, C and so on). The word "WISH" becomes "JVFU" when you apply the cipher and similarly "JVFU" becomes "WISH" when you reapply the cipher. This might not be a strong encryption, but still you can use it to post or chat using encoded text. With the help of this encryption technique you can convey secret messages to your friends. All you need is this software, to decode the encoded text. Thus, ROT-13 is a fun to use tool with the help of which you can create encoded messages seamlessly.
