Store and Share Files Online through CloudMe

Posted: 02 Feb 2012 10:00 AM PST

CloudMe is a free cloud service to store and share files online. People have been sharing files since the second home personal computer was purchased and booted up. Lately this has taken on the form of "the cloud". Storing your life "on the cloud" has become all the rage. And applications that allow you to share your stuff online more easily are growing in popularity. CloudMe is one of these applications to share files online.

Nothing to Download with CloudMe

Unlike some other sharing platforms, CloudMe doesn't require a download. All you have to do is surf over to the website, create an account, and you're ready to begin sharing your files. Since there's no download, there's no worries about an installer package that wants to make changes to your system or secretly install malware.

Uploading to the CloudMe Cloud Is Easy

The CloudMe file browsing interface is easy to use and understand. My only problem with it was the fact that the text was small and hard to see without making adjustments to my browser. Unlike other similar file sharing sites, CloudMe allows you to easily upload any type of file you want; you're not limited to images and video clips. I didn't like that my photos and video clips didn't show up as or with thumbnails so people I wanted to share them with could see them.

Share Files Online – Confusing

With CloudMe, you have the ability to share content on your Facebook profile, Twitter feed, Google +, by email and with CloudMe. But, the popups for allowing the share goes to the background. It makes it difficult to perform the share. I clicked the Share 'button' five times before giving up. Then I brought my Taskbar up and saw that I had five extra browser windows open. When I brought the first one up to be the active window, I saw that it was a Facebook share window. It would have been better if the first share window had stayed in front as the active window.

CloudMe Mobile

There's a CloudMe app for both the iPhone and the Android. Unfortunately, there isn't one for the Palm market and my other phone isn't an iPhone or an Android phone. So I can't say anything about how the app works or looks.

The CloudMe Desktop-Another Mystery

Like the rest of the CloudMe platform, the desktop is a web-based platform. According to the advertising material, you can choose applications from the CloudMe marketplace. I'm going out on a limb to guess that this means purchasing them. The advertising also says that you can customize the web desktop however you want it. I was curious about this feature, so I clicked on it from my main CloudMe page, and waited for it to load. And waited. Then I went to refill my drink and waited some more. I gave up on it after ten minutes.

All in all, I'd definitely pass on CloudMe. If I need or want to share files online with people on Facebook, Twitter, or Google+, I can do that from my profiles there, and I don't need a third party platform to open an email message to someone.

Free Application Store for Windows: Pokki

Posted: 02 Feb 2012 07:00 AM PST

Pokki is a free application store which offers users access to many free applications. It's currently in BETA but it does already offer a wide range of applications, that you can download straight from Pokki's application.

Pokki's Application Store

Once you have downloaded Pokki and installed it, you will get the program pined to your task bar. This is really nice to have because you can quickly access the program as soon as you installed it. There are four sections to the program featured, new, browse and my apps. In the screenshot below you will be able to see what the program looks like.

Optimized-pokki_fatured

The applications act the same as the program itself, as soon as you have downloaded an application it will create a shortcut that will be pined to your task bar.

At the moment it seems that you are unable to get rid of an application shortcut in the task bar. If you right-click on one of the shortcuts you get the options to relaunch the application or to remove it, which will remove it not only from the task bar but from Pokki as well.

Below are some screenshots of what the applications look like.

Below is a chess application.

Below is a Music application

Featured

The 'featured' part of the application store is where Pokki will advertise applications to you. In the screenshot below I have shown what the featured part looks like.

This can come in handy for users, as it provides you with a fast way to look at new applications and it gives you the opportunity to use applications that you may not have tried before.

New

The 'new' part of the program is where you will be able to find all the latest applications that have been added to Pokki. Below I have posted a screenshot of what the 'new' section looks like.

Optimized-pokki_new

This is a nice feature to have in any application store as it allows users to look quickly through all the most recent apps. Of course with section is not categorized so any type of application could come up in the 'new' section.

Browse

The 'browse' section of the program is where you can search through the application store. Below I will post a screenshot of what  the 'browse' section looks like.

Optimized-pokki_browse

This is a good feature to have in an application store because you are allowing users to quickly browse through all the available applications. However it would be nice to have a search box where users could input the name of an application, as this is a much faster method. One good feature of this section is that it is in alphabetical order, which makes it easier to find the application you want.

My Apps

The 'my apps' section of the program is where you can launch or remove an application. Screenshot below shows what the 'my apps' section looks like.

Optimized-pokki_my_apps

This is an important part of any application store, as it allows users to manage their applications. It’s nice to see that it is a clear option or remove an application as seen in the screenshot above because it says 'remove' underneath the  application you put your mouse over.

Summary about this application store

Overall Pokki is a very good free application store. It is only currently in BETA but I think this will be a great application once it's released.

Access Your Google Tasks in a Browser Window with Powr Taskr

Posted: 02 Feb 2012 06:00 AM PST

PowrTaskr is a free program which lets you access Google Tasks in a browser window. Google Tasks is a web applet that you access through your Gmail account. It's the third option down under the big Google image on the left of your Gmail window. Clicking this link opens a small pop out window that gives you access to your task list. Powr Taskr opens your tasks in a full browser window.

Small Download, Tiny Footprint

There's no installation involved with the Powr Taskr program. Download the file on the Powr Taskr homepage and run it. It runs in the background. As long as you're logged into your Gmail account in Internet Explorer, hitting the Control key twice in succession will open your Google task list.

Google Tasks

Everybody has a task list. Google Tasks allows you to have access to that task list no matter where you are, as long as you have access to a browser and the Internet. I tried using the applet while logged into one of my Gmail accounts in each of the browsers I use on a regular basis, Firefox, Safari, and Opera. It didn't work too well until I logged in to my account in Internet Explorer. Clicking the Control key twice in succession will open your task list in a new browser window. But, it's slow. There really isn't anything to Google Tasks that should take long to load, but the window took almost twenty seconds to load.

Full Access to All of Your Tasks

Powr Taskr gives you full access to all of the tasks that you have entered previously. It also allows you to add new tasks, modify currently open tasks, and close your tasks.

There's not really much more to be said about Powr Taskr. It's tiny and easy to use. It doesn't add any bells and whistles to anything. It just makes it easier to use Google Tasks.
