The developer’s have ensured to make this software easy to use keeping in mind the simplicity of the features it comes with to give you easy access to hard drives from desktop.

Access Hard Drives from Desktop

The main purpose of this free desktop mini bar is to help you open the Drives and the explorer through a shortcut. When you open the software a small bar opens that has the names of the drives and windows explorer. If you put the pointer on the name of any of the drives then the name of the drive and the space available will be shown to you. Once you click on the drive then it opens and you can start using all the files and folders present on it.

While you are not using the MiniBar it is still open on the background and does not disturb while you perform other actions. To make changes in the settings of the software you need to right click on the interface of the software and click on options. The general tab helps you change the language and the path of the software. Here you can also select whether you want to see the info window, start minibar with windows, activate hotkeys, see border, start windows with explorer, etc. Then in the position tab you can select where you want the software to appear and align it.

While in the options menu you can select if you wish the software to appear on your screen or run in the background. The minimize tab offers you the option to select or dis-select the timings you wish the software to be present on your window or minimized while available from the task bar. In case you predefine the timings the software would minimize itself at the desired time whereby on not choosing this option, the program would never minimize.

Through the drives tab you can select which drives should appear and which ones should be hidden. There is the special buttons tab where you can include more buttons to the interface of the software, this includes the explorer, network, controls, show desktop, etc. Through this software you can also schedule the shut down time of the computer. For this you need to go to the shutdown PC tab and set actual date, actual time, shut down pc on and shutdown pc at, etc.

All in all using CFMiniBar is very easy and you can change settings according to your requirements. Once you are finished with the changes click on save settings and all the changes will be saved.

PLEX: How To Setup Plex Media Server

Posted: 21 Sep 2012 09:30 AM PDT

Plex is a free media center software with a simple yet visually appealing user interface. This media center has two parts: the Plex media server and the Plex media center itself. This media center is really easy to setup and manage. The front end media center is Open-Source and is based on XMBC (Another Amazing Media Center Software), while the server is a Closed-Source proprietary software.

The server part of Plex Media Center is used to manage all your media (songs, videos, photos, podcasts, etc.). And client part is used to actually stream your media. You can stream the media on almost any device: PC, smart phones, tablets, etc.

In this tutorial we will learn how to setup Plex, so that you can access your media from anywhere from within the network or through the internet. The best part about this media center solution is that it is available for Windows, Mac, Linux, and others for free. So this application is an ideal solution if you want to build a Home Theater System and stream its content to anywhere as required by you.

plex media center

The special thing about Plex is that, the server and the client part are separate individual installations. So, you can install the server on a computer and run the media center from any corner of your house. This allows you to access your media from anywhere and stream it according to your needs. The interface is designed so that you can use the application from the couch without any problem.

Plex is an innovative way of enjoying and consuming your media.

How To Install and configure Plex Media Server:

  • There is nothing with the installation just download Plex Media Server (56.4MB) and simply install it like any other Windows application. After the installation process you will need to run Plex server. To do so, start the program from the start menu. Once the application starts running you will notice an icon in the system tray as shown in the screen shot below.
    plex system tray icon
  • Double click on the icon in the system tray so that you can add media to your media server. When you click on the system tray a web page will open up. This is the server interface on Plex and from here you are supposed to add and manage your media.

    plex media server screenshot

  • To add media click on any of the five icons as shown above. Clicking on an icon will start the process of adding the corresponding media, example clicking on Photoswill start the process of adding photos to the media server. A dialog box as shown below will come up. Here you can specify the directory from where you want to add the files to the plex media server.

    plex how to add media

  • You can add multiple folders here without any problem. After you are done adding, click on add section and Plex media server will start adding the files. The best thing about Plex is that its will automatically start gathering and adding meta-data (Info, album art, artist info, etc.) about your media.

Now you are done with the server part.

Note: Follow the same as above procedure, while adding videos, music etc.

How To Install and configure Plex Media Center:

  • Now that you have installed the media server and added media to it. Its time to get started with media center. Download the setup (41.3MB) and start the installation, there is nothing special here either and it will be over in a while.
  • To start Plex media center, find it in the start menu and click on it. You will be greeted with its awesome user interface. If you want to experience the media center on the same PC you installed the media server, then all you have to do is install it and when you run it the media center will automatically detect the server. And the added media will appear in the media center. Now you can relax, browse and enjoy your media in a simple, intuitive, and easy to use interface.
  • If you want to run the media center on any computer other than the server, then we have to do a little configuration. The installation part is the same as the above. You just  have to add the plex media server’s IP address in the client. To know whats your server’s IP is, use ipconfig in the Command prompt on the server computer.
  • Now that you know the server’s IP, just navigate to preferences in the media center. Check Manually specify server and in Address location add your Plex media server’s IP address. When you exit the preference menu you will be able to see all your media in the Plex media center.

plex preference

Verdict:

One thing that I love is the flexibility and simplicity of deployment. This application is one of the best centralized media library management system. And the clients are supported on so many platform and it is free on most platforms. Hey, you cannot have everything right ! The mobile clients are paid which I absolutely hate.

I am planning to follow up this article with detailed features of Plex Media Center; so stay tuned.

Create and Edit Videos with VSDC Free Video Editor

Posted: 21 Sep 2012 06:30 AM PDT

VDSC Free Video Editor is a fully featured free non-linear video editor which comes with a modern looking interface, great multimedia support and a large selection of audio and video effects and tools which can be used to manipulate the video that you are editing. This free video editor is a great alternative to Movie Maker which we recently talked about in our review of Windows Live Essentials.

VSDC Free Video Editor default window

As you can see from the image above, interface of VDSC Video Editor isn’t that much different from that of Movie Maker. It follows the same type of design that Microsoft Office does and pretty much every other application from the Windows arsenal. When it comes to what’s under the hood, what VDSC can actually do, difference also isn’t that big between it and Movie Maker. Some of the more interesting features found in VDSC Free Video Editor would be:

  • Built-in conversion tool for both audio and video formats
  • DVD authoring with an option to burn DVDs directly in VDSC
  • Non-linear video editor – jump and edit video at any point
  • Add audio and video effects – transformation, color correction, gain, echo etc.
  • Good format support – AVI, MKV, MP4, MPG, MP3, WAV, JPEG, PNG, PSD

All the major video and audio formats are supported, and as you can see you can even import images, and not only that you can even import Photoshop’s PSD editable format inside VDSC editor and insert it into the video that you are creating or editing.

Similar software: AVS Video Editor, FlixMaster, VideoToolBox.

How to create and edit videos with VDSC Free Video Editor

When you first start VDSC, you’re gonna have to create a project where you’re gonna have to set things like video size, frame rate and audio channels. The project can either be blank from the start or you can import videos, images and audio right away. Third option would be to record video material for the project, you can do this if you have a webcam or some other type of video recording device.

VSDC Free Video Editor editing video

Add the multimedia that you would like to use while creating the video, use the Import Video and Image option when creating the project and then you can start editing the video. Each project will be listed in the left sidebar and each project can have a scene where different videos can be edited. Around the main video area you can see tools for editing, we used the Eclipse tool and look at the bottom, the Eclipse shape was added to the timeline near the end. Preview and save the edited video by clicking on Project Build.

VSDC Free Video Editor exporting video

There’s video profiles which you can use to quickly set the video quality export to all of the previous mentioned formats or simply select the Convert files option if you only want project files converted.

Conclusion

With VDSC Free Video Editor you can not only edit existing videos, but you can create new ones either by recording or piecing together of smaller videos and images. Practice makes perfect, so download VDSC free video editor and start learning how to create and edit video with it.
