Free File and Folder Size Analyzer: Folder Usage

Folder Usage is a free application which you can use to see how large folders and files are on a specific location on the computer and it also comes with file filtering capabilities. This free file and folder size analyzer is gonna check not only folders, but also sub-folders and report you with a precise size of the data contained within folders, which is something that we cannot see when browsing through files, because Windows Explorer doesn’t show how large folders are, only files.

Default interface of Folder Usage comes up empty, you’re gonna have to open the folder location that you want to analyze on your own. Notice that there are two areas where the analyzer is gonna display results. One on the left for folders, and one on the right for files. Knowing precise amounts of data contained within folders is important when for example you want to burn DVDs or Blu-Rays, or when you want to copy files to a flash drive. Some of the more interesting capabilities that Folder Usage has would be:

Analyze and check to see the size of folders and files
Hierarchical display of folders and files
Filters to sort files based on creation date, access rate and so on
Integration with the main Windows Explorer Shell

The last feature, integration with the main Windows Explorer shell is optional. It’s gonna have to be activated manually and it’s only gonna add an option in the right click context menu to open up folders with Folder Usage, it won’t allow you to see folder size the same way that you can see on files and even icons.

How to check folder size with Folder Usage

All of us have been in a situation where we are browsing through files and folders on our computer and we want to find out how large a folder is, but we can’t see that without right clicking on the folder and clicking properties. Once you do that, you also have to wait until everything from the folder is accounted for by Windows, which can take a long time if the folder is large and has a lot of files.

Folder Usage is a lot more faster, and in order to use it, there’s no need to right click on folders and selecting Properties. As you can see from the image above, folders are presented with their size written next to them. Before you’ll be able to see folder information, you’re gonna have to open the destination in the filed at the top of the window and then click on Analyze.

Files can be easily filtered out based on the dates that they were created, accessed, modified or their size, which makes it easier to find files and folders important for you.

Conclusion

Folder Usage is a very small application, less than half a megabyte in size which doesn’t have to be installed. It’s gonna save you time when you need detailed folder size information for large number of folders, and it can also help you filter files more quickly.

Pictr.com is a free image hosting service through which you can host images in different sizes. It offers image hosting in a single click. You can upload images of JPG, PNG, BMP, and GIF file formats. Maximum file size can be 2MB.

Pictr lets you upload images from your system or directly enter an image URL and upload images to the server. It then provides URLs at which these images can be accessed. You can also resize a particular image if you want.

Mibbit is a free web based IRC client. It runs on almost all of the popular browsers. You don’t have to download any thing to use this online IRC client, it entirely runs on your web browser. It offers most of the features that are required for an IRC client; and much more. This a simple approach to an IRC client that runs everywhere; this is just amazing.

The best thing about this app is that its portable as its a web application and will work with every browser which supports Java Script. Also being a web app the application works on the most of the smartphones without any problem, so you don’t need to download IRC client for iPhone, or IRC client for Android.

This application almost ends the need of having a standalone IRC client, here all you have to do is sign is with your Mibbit ID and start chatting on any platform. The interface is simple and easy to use and does not deviate from the traditional design pattern. It pretty much feels like your are using a desktop IRC client.

Bitrix24 free version is available only for 12 members. If your company has more employees then you’ll need to switch to paid version, or you can use other free enterprise social networks, like: Yammer or Socialcast.

Though Bitrix24 offers a limited membership in its free version, the options available are huge. 5GB of online storage is also provided. Administration rights are also provided in the free version; so you know what that means.

Just visit this business social network website and sign up for free; with your personal or official email. You will be sent a confirmation message to your email. Just click on the activation link provided in your email and get started.

Bitrix24 is one of the few enterprise social networks that let you sign up with personal email id.

If you sign up first then you will become the administrator and you will be asked for company name and domain name also (like ilovefreesoftware.bitrix24.com ). If someone has already created the network, then they can just send an invitation to your email to join the network. The administrator can just edit the posts and groups; no other extra functions are given to the administrator.

Activity Stream:

The task priority level can be marked as low, normal, and high. You can add a reminder and time planning also for the participants. You can add files and give deadlines. Sounds like perfect business strategy.

When you are executing it then you can mark it as executing and when you take a break then you can mark pause. This will help the task assigner to monitor how much time you have spent on it. You can also create subtask or quick subtask. After completion of the task you can mark it with a flag also.

Calendar:

Calendar is another interesting feature available to schedule events. All the tasks also will be shown here. You can mark some dates as occupied, undecided, free, and away for others to know your status. You can also schedule events and mark the period between which, the event will take place. You can give description as well as add special notes.

Files:

When you click on files option in your activity stream page, you will be directed to this page. Here all the files shared by the employees will be displayed.

You can perform many actions like open the file, download the file, replace the current document, lock it for editing, edit in MS Office, view the properties of file, view the discussions on it, copy the link, rename it, copy it, move it, restrict its access permissions, or delete it. You can directly select all files and delete them using the Recycle Bin button.

Conversations:

In conversations tab you can view the conversations that you have participated in. So, from there you can directly reply to posts and like posts.

Groups:

Some predefined groups will be created initially when you first sign up. If you don't need any groups, you can just delete them by clicking on actions tab.

In groups you can invite your colleagues, post files for group members, assign tasks, schedule events, etc. If you are the moderator then you can edit settings, assign others as moderators, edit who can join the group and you can also delete the group.

Chat:

In this business social network a separate instant messenger is also available; like normal social network websites. It is located at the bottom right, where you can also see notifications, and contacts.

Here you can chat privately with your colleagues in a separate window. You can off/on the chat sounds also.

This business social network has lot of cool features but only limitation is the number of members in free version. The only change in paid version is that, the storage space, and an own domain name without the extension of Bitrix24 will be provided.

Share USB Devices Over LAN or Internet with Daemon Tools USB

Daemon Tools USB is a new application offered by the creators of the famous virtual drive utility. Now with Daemon Tools USB you can easily share USB devices over local area networks, virtual private networks or VPNs for short and the entire internet, if you configure Daemon tools to work that way. For the time that Daemon Tools is in beta, it’s gonna be free, all the more reasons to install it and see how it works before it goes commercial.

What you can see on the image above is the default interface of Daemon Tools USB. Note that the list of Remote Devices is empty, which means that there aren’t any devices to which you could connect and with which you can share USB devices. List of available devices for sharing is gonna be displayed in the tab next to the Remote Devices Tab. Some of the more interesting features offered by Daemon Tools USB are:

Share USB devices when you connect with other computers via network
Supported computer detection via LAN, WAN, VLAN, VPN and Internet
Combination of both the client and the server apps
Great device support – flash drives, printers, web cameras, printers supported

Setting up devices for sharing isn’t that difficult, if you are connected to a local network with other computers you should see them in the list of Remote Devices, and from that point on all that you have to do in order to share USB devices is a few mouse clicks.

How to share USB devices over network with Daemon Tools USB

Remote Devices are not gonna be detected automatically, they are gonna have to be imported by clicking on the server box icon with the green plus sign in the upper left corner of the screen.

The computers, those which are connected to your network are gonna be detected in the upper Network list. To add a computer, simply select it from that list and click OK. If you want, you can also add PCs based on their IP address and port number, which would mean that with this option you can easily connect to other computers over the world wide web.

Once you add devices they are gonna appear in the Remote Devices list. With imported remote devices you can now easily start sharing any USB devices that you have connected to your computer. Simply open up the Local Devices tab, right click on the device that you want to share and select Share. Make sure that you select proper remote device and local USB device, that they really are the ones that you want to share.

Conclusion

Setting up flash drive sharing over a local network or over the internet is not very simple, but with Daemon Tools it get’s a lot more easier, and you practically don’t have to do anything, just make sure to have ports opened and that you are connected to a network for the entire time that access to USB devices is necessary.
