New Features of Windows 8

Posted: 18 Dec 2011 09:59 AM PST

Here are some of the new features of Windows 8.

Microsoft launched Windows 8 recently, and we did a series of tutorials on Windows 8. We wanted to take a moment to cover new features that have been introduced in Windows 8, so that you can decide if you want to download Windows 8.

As you might be familiar by now, the new look of the Windows 8 is inspired by the Windows Phone Metro User Interface, but that is not the only new feature in Windows 8. It is bundled with a plethora of new features. In this article I will try to present the crux of all the significant innovative features of Windows 8.

New Features of Windows 8

The first thing that you would see (or you would not see till you hover your mouse to the bottom left corner) is the Start Orb button. It is different from the start button of previous versions of Windows in a number of ways. When you hover your mouse over it, it will show a tile displaying the date and time. The pop up menu that appears shows the search, share, devices and settings option.

When you click any of these (eg. settings), it appears on the right side (as a sidebar) with its various options like power, notifications etc.

Of course, the most talked about feature of Windows 8 is Metro UI. Check out the article I linked to earlier, to know more details about that.

The faster boot time is another welcome feature from Microsoft. In my machine with 4GB of RAM, it takes just 7 seconds to reboot the system.

Windows 8 Explorer has been considerably overhauled. If you remember the Ribbon appearance of Toolbars in MS Office 2010, you will see that Microsoft has revamped the Windows Explorer with the same thing.

Wallpapers and Taskbar in Windows 8 can be extended to multiple monitors. Yes you got it right. This feature is finally incorporated into Windows.

Windows 8 Task Manager is completely revamped with two type of looks. One is simple look that displays only the currently running applications. The other look appears when you click the extended button and it presents a lot of options and features.

Microsoft has added Windows Live integration feature that allows to synchronize all your setting and files across multiple computers.

What I presented in this article was just the tip of the iceberg. I will come up with more innovative features in upcoming articles. Stay tuned.

Software to Hide Controls of Windows: UnderCover

Posted: 18 Dec 2011 08:00 AM PST

UnderCover is a free software to hide controls of Windows. When you run any software on your computer that has button controls or other controls, you can use UnderCover to hide controls on that. This could be useful if you are running some program, and you don't want anyone to tinker with its controls. For example, you might be playing some movie on Real Player, and do not want your kids to push buttons of Real Player; this freeware will come handy in that case (or, you can just use Keyboard lock software).

UnderCover is quite easy to use. Just download UnderCover from here. The download size is less than 1 MB, so it should download in a jiffy. Once you have downloaded it, double click on the exe file to run it. There is no installation required.

When you run the software, it will immediately go to the system tray, and will show a small icon. To hide controls on any window, just press Ctrl key, and Right click on that window. This will make controls of that Window disappear. Its as simple as that.

Window Controls

I am not sure what is the exact procedure to get the controls back. For me, getting control backs was a bit random. In some cases, the control would come back on just pressing the Ctrl key. In other cases, I had to click Ctrl and Right click, and in some cases I had to kill the software.

To change settings, you can just Right click on the system tray icon, to get the settings Windows.

UnderCover

UnderCover is a nice tool to quickly hide controls of any Windows. It is not perfect, but it is quite unique in what it does. Try it out, and see how it works for you.

UnderCover comes from DonationCoder, the publisher of some of the popular software like ActiveHotkeys, and free file encryption software.
