Desktop Toolbar to Access Frequently Used Programs: Coolbarz Posted: 20 Dec 2011 09:00 AM PST Coolbarz is a free desktop toolbar especially designed for Windows 7. It helps in the quickest possible access to some of the most used programs. The Coolbarz toolbar will be available on the desktop and with the help of this one can easily avail all the favorite programs, although it is primarily designed for Windows 7, one can also use the software in some of the other previous versions of Windows as well like Windows XP and Windows Vista. There can be toolbars on one or all of the four sides of the desktop and these can be customized according to the user's needs and preferences. Let’s look at the features of this desktop toolbar:
There are many other interesting options in terms of other functionalities of the Coolbarz that is expected to attract any user. The Enable Update Notifications and the Check Now options are related to the search for the availability of newer and improved versions of the software. The Launch Shortcuts option when enabled will directly launch the shortcuts and when it is disabled the programs will be accessed using the target paths of the shortcuts. Data Interval option is related with the responsiveness of the Coolbarz and the rate at which data is retrieved from the mouse cursor. The Always Accessible option enables an all time access of the toolbars which might turn out to be rather inconvenient when it comes to the performance of all other work by the user. The Fade coolbarz in and out option deals with the transparency issues. Important files and some of the user's favorite internet shortcuts can also be added to this desktop toolbar. These are accessed by a direct link to the actual file or shortcut and this can be very useful. Comodo Unite: Secure Networking and Collaboration Tool Posted: 20 Dec 2011 08:00 AM PST Comodo Unite is a free networking and collaboration software. It lets you share data amongst a group of systems. Many companies, both big and small, allow their employees to work from home. This saves both the company and the employer money. Rent for smaller office spaces cost less for the company, employees get to stay home and not pay for childcare or sit in traffic for hours on end. But, how do you keep the communications between the office server(s) and your employee(s) secure? You could go out and purchase an expensive solution with secure net keys. Or, you could use a product such as Comodo Unite, a thin, full-featured Virtual Private Network product. What is a Virtual Private NetworkA Virtual Private Network, also known as a VPN, is a tool that allows two computers to communicate securely over the Internet. With a VPN in place, an employee can securely log into their employer's network and perform the same sort of job functions that they'd be able to do at the employer's office. The company's helpdesk can even use the Remote Desktop Control protocol to fix problems without sending people to the employee's home. Even better, you can log into your desktop at work from the comfort of home and work on projects using the programs on your computer at work. Sensitive company communications can be held using the fully encrypted instant messaging system. VPN software is a type of software that allows collaboration across a Wide Area Network with users in a number of widely separated areas. For the non-commercial user, all this means that you can safely and securely share photos and videos, hold secure conversations, and ask your teenage niece or nephew for help installing a pesky piece of software you're having trouble with. And you can do all this without risking intrusions from unwelcome visitors. One neat feature of Comodo Unite is that unlike most other VPN packages, you don't need to know the IP address of any of the other computers you wish to connect to. The Comodo Unite Installation and SetupInstalling Comodo Unite is straightforward and easy. The first step is downloading the client installation package. Once the download is completed, users of windows Vista and 7, will need to right-click the installer and choose 'Run as Administrator.' The normal installation options will then be presented, accepting the license, choosing where to install, etc. When the installation completes, you will begin the setup process. When I ran through this, it took a little longer than I expected. Your email address is your username and you'll need a strong password. Intuitive and Easy to Use InterfaceSetting up your network and adding users is easy and straightforward with Comodo Unite. Your network manager chooses a name and sets a password (Network menu, Create Network). These two pieces of information are distributed to the users that will be using this collaboration software. Once they have the software installed and have created their accounts, they simply join the network (Network menu, Join a Network). The network name and password is typed in and 'Add' is clicked. That's it. No tweaking with a firewall, editing router settings, nothing. It even works on networks that are behind a Network Address Translation (NAT) firewall. It's really that easy. Once the network has been created and joined, you will configure the program for Remote Desktop Control, where you can control applications on another computer remotely, and set up the chat and messaging clients you'll be using. My biggest beef here is that Skype isn't one of the options to choose from. But Yahoo, MSN, ICQ, Facebook, and a few others are there. All in all, Comodo Unite is a very good collaboration software choice. The suite of options available and the ease of installation and configuration make this a natural choice, especially for the home user that doesn't have an IT staff that can be called upon to perform these tasks. Setup RSS Alerts: How To Get Email Alerts When RSS Feed is Updated Posted: 20 Dec 2011 07:00 AM PST Here is a small tutorial that explains how to setup RSS alerts, so that you get alerts on email whenever RSS feed is updated. I subscribe to tons of RSS feeds, and use feed readers to keep track of them. However, sometimes I want to track some feed more closely, and want to be aware as soon as it is updated. One way is to keep going back to my RSS reader to see if there is any update to the feed. However, that is not the most optimum solution. Wouldn't it be great if there was a service which would let me setup alerts on RSS feed of my choice, so that whenever the feed is updated, I get an email alert. So, I started looking for such a service today, and guess what I ended up finding: Yahoo Alerts. Yahoo Alerts is a free service from Yahoo that lets you setup alerts for a lot of things: keywords, local news, sports, stocks, weather, etc. However, we are interested only in getting alerts for RSS feed, and luckily for us, Yahoo Alerts provides that. How to Setup Alerts for RSS Feed:
That's it. Now you have successfully created Email alert for RSS feed. Also check out Klipfolio Dashboard, and how to setup feed for Yahoo mail. Ironically, I have been using Google alerts since quite a long time, and thought they are the best out there. However, I stumbled across Yahoo alerts only while searching for this RSS alerts feature, and have to say that Yahoo Alerts are much better than Google Alerts. Yahoo has lot of neat functionalities out there; it just needs to market them better. Let me know if you are aware of any other service that lets you setup similar RSS alerts. Related posts:
