Cross Platform Text and Image Organizer: MyShelf

Posted: 07 Jul 2012 05:00 PM PDT

MyShelf is a free personal text and image organizer which allows you to create virtual shelves and then store everything interesting that you find in a neat way, for easier search and access later on. This data organizer is completely free, written in Java, which means that it can be used on all three major operating systems, but not only them, there are also smartphone and tablet apps available for download and installation. There’s an option to connect them all with the help of wireless network so that MyShelf data can be accessed from:

  • Windows
  • Mac
  • Linux
  • iPhone
  • iPad
  • Android

easily and without a hassle. In a way MyShelf is like an offline version of Facebook, a social network just for you where you can store important information locally on your computer, without going online.

MySelf default window

This is the default window where you already have a shelf created which contains a short tutorial on how to use this free data organization utility. There are just 2 types of data which can be saved inside the MyShelf database, text and images, by text we really mean text, you cannot load files and have text extracted from there, just copy and paste it inside the program. Let’s have a look at how exactly it is that MyShelf works.

Similar software: InMyDiary, Stuff Organizer, Data Crow.

Text and Image Organizer – MyShelf

Notice on the image above that there are 4 tabs, 4 options between which you can switch. Browse is the first one, it can be seen above, the second one is Add, which is as the title says where you can add a new Shelf and populate it with text or images.

MySelf adding shelf

Here we’ve added an image, and entered a little bit of text next to the image so that we know what the picture is about. If you want you can add more of these containers, as they are called. Each image that you add to MyShelf automatically becomes a container. At the top enter a title for this particular shelf, for example if you just found a cool tutorial online, for creating a bracelet, create a shelf called tutorials and save it there. After clicking on Save, the newly created shelf should appear in the Browser tab:

MySelf shelf added

If you want to add something else to this particular shelf later on, you can do so by clicking on the Quick Edit Mode. After you do that new containers, those white squares that you can see will be created, where text and images that you add will be placed. If you want to export data from MyShelf you can do so by clicking on that small green icon in the lower right corner of the container. Clicking there will open up the Save as dialog with which you can save the documents or images that you have contained within it.

Cross platform and device sharing via wireless network

We mentioned this in the introduction, and you can find the necessary settings if you click on the Configuration tab:

MySelf network settings

Here you can find out the necessary info for connecting other devices to MyShelf database. After you do that, everything that you save on you computer will by shown on your iPhone, Android or iPad, after you install the MyShelf app there. MyShelf is a great data organizer, download it free.

Remap Keyboard with KeyTweak

Posted: 07 Jul 2012 03:30 PM PDT

KeyTweak is a free keyboard remapping utility, which you can use in order to change which characters will show up in your text editor or any other text input field while you are pressing the keys of your keyboard.

It’s a very small program, only a few MB in size, and remapping keys with it is only a matter of a few simple clicks of a mouse and keyboard of course.

KeyTweak default window

Similar software: MapKeyboard

As you can see from the image above the interface of KeyTweak is very easy to follow and understand. Which keys were changed can be easily tracked and if you no longer want to have your keys remapped, then you simply remove all the keys that you’ve changed together or you can remove the remappings one by one. Changing the keys can be very useful for several different reasons, but one that’s most fun would be to prank someone, make them think that they are going crazy. Or, you might be using a particular keyboard since a long time and suddenly move to a keyboard that has some keys placed differently.

Remap keyboard characters to different keys

To start changing the default characters assigned to keys on your keyboard, open up KeyTweak and you’ll see what you see on the image above. Let’s start familiarizing ourselves with all the ins and outs of the program.

KeyTweak changing key

Each one of the keys on the displayed keyboard above has a number assigned to it instead of the keys that they normally have. When you click on a particular key you will see a report at the lower portion of the program window where you will see which character is actually attached to this particular key. In the case of the key above, you can see that the key number 110, which would be the key in the top left corner is assigned to be the Escape key. That’s the key you’d normally find there, let’s change it to something else.

KeyTweak changing key step two

Select that particular key which you want to change and then simply look at the Keyboard Control area at the bottom of the screen. There you will see a drop down menu of all the available characters which you can change for your particular keyboard. From the looks of it, it seems that KeyTweak only uses the default US keyboard layouts, so if you perhaps are using a keyboard which has extra keys for your native language characters, you won’t be able to include those keys in the remapping, or should I say you won’t be able to include those characters. That’s not a great loss, because for what you can use KeyTweak, a few important keys like Insert and Tab are more than enough.

Uses of key remapping

The main place where the remapping of keys can come in handy would be to disable the Insert key, which can cause a lot of problems while typing. If it’s accidentally turned on without you noticing, and you jump somewhere in the middle of the text to correct something, then you could end up replacing the entire text that follows after the location where you made the correction. Other possible use we already mentioned, pranking, in either case, KeyTweak is very helpful and it’s free.

As we saw above, KeyTweak makes it pretty easy to remap keys of keyboard.

Download KeyTweak.

Control Music Players with Hand Gestures: Flutter

Posted: 07 Jul 2012 02:00 PM PDT

Flutter is a free hand gesture utility which you can use to control your favorite music players. Controlling applications with hand gestures is becoming more and more popular, especially now that gaming consoles like Xbox have showed people how much fun and ease of use this type of control involves. What Flutter offers is a fully functional, hand movement control system for 4 of the most popular music players on the world:

  • iTunes
  • Spotify
  • Winamp
  • Windows Media Player

Using this application is not very difficult, mainly because there’s no need for actual computer interaction, but there is some basic configuration that’s necessary before you can start using music player hand gestures app, and let’s not forget that there’s also some basic equipment that you need to have, by equipment we of course are talking about a web camera.

How does Flutter hand gestures music player work?

Why web camera is necessary is pretty much obvious, you need it so that the computer has eyes, an input device with which it can monitor for any sign of hand movement which is set as the trigger for music player control.

Flutter default window

What you see on the image above is Flutter running in the system tray, and iTunes opened, ready to receive commands from Flutter. After you start Flutter for the first time you will gonna have to go through the setup wizard where you will be able to make basic config of the entire hand gesture control system.

Similar software: gMote Mouse gestures.

Flutter first step

During this config you will also be warned if there is no application running from the list of previously mentioned 4, that you start one up. For now Flutter is only available for these 4 players, and on top of all that it’s only available for Windows 7 and Mac, so users with older version of the Window system cannot use Flutter.

Flutter config

The most important step that you’ll need to go through can be seen above. This is where you will be asked to assign a hand gesture to the Play command of your music player. On the following screen you will be informed that the same command also applies for the Pause command, so whenever you want to start playing something, or resume songs you simply do the recorded hand gesture.

Which options can be controlled with Flutter

There are only two options that you can control with Flutter, these would be the two previously mentioned Play and Pause. Other options cannot unfortunately be controlled with the help of Flutter, and if you were looking for something more advanced, you’ll need to look elsewhere.

With that being said, there are still a lot of situations where you can use Flutter. For example if you are having a party and you want to impress people, you can just walk up to your computer, Flutter will automatically detect you while you come up to the camera, it will be running in the system tray, and you can wave your hands to start the music, very cool addon indeed, use it for free.

Free CAD Software to Create CAD Designs: NanoCAD

Posted: 07 Jul 2012 11:00 AM PDT

NanoCAD is a free alternative to more popular and what’s more important more expensive CAD applications like AutoCAD. For those who don’t know what CAD applications are, they are design applications, which you can use to create everything from a chair, to rockets, and NanoCAD offers us to do all those things completely free.

NanoCAD default window

This is the default NanoCAD interface, it’s looks very simple, clean and elegant, which is no surprise, this is a free CAD application after all. To download and install the program you’re gonna have to give your email address, where you will receive both the download link and a serial number which needs to be entered during installation. After installation you’re also gonna have to register NanoCAD, for free of course, on the NanoCAD website. Upon doing all that, you will reach the window that you can see above.

Similar software: Autodesk123, DraftSight, CadStd.

What does NanoCAD has to offer?

Let’s get right down to it and start creating a design inside NanoCAD. A good start would be to have a quick overview of all the features which are supported, so that we know what we are dealing with exactly. All the necessary tools and options are there, but let’s go over the basic ones if some of you failed to notice them on the image above:

  • Layers – create layers just like you would in GIMP
  • Shapes – the most important part of any design application
  • Precise measuring – tools for making precise measuring are available
  • Model and Layout view – switch between the two
  • Object settings – change practically every setting of design objects

A lot more tools and features, far more useful than the ones that were mentioned here are available in NanoCad, and you’re gonna have to install this free CAD software in order to try them out.

Creating designs with NanoCAD – free CAD software

Very simple design with NanoCAD can be made if you for example take one of the shapes on the far left side of the window, and then start clicking away on the main work area, which is located to the right:

NanoCAD creating design

Here we have created a very useless design with the help of the Revision Could shape. While we were creating it, each one of the sides were created independently, with their own manipulation points, which is a nice touch. Another thing that we noticed is that there were helper lines available when we were coming close to another endpoint of the design. This is obviously just the first step, and to create something more concrete a lot more work is needed, don’t judge NanoCAD based solely on this.

NanoCAD supported CAD file formats and conclusion

NanoCAD supports two of the most popular CAD formats:

  • DWG
  • DWF

If you are not in the position to buy commercial CAD software, then NanoCAD is the thing for you. It small, at least small when it comes to CAD software standards, it’s free, and best of all it supports all the most popular CAD file formats, so get a free copy and see how NanoCAD can help you.

Protect Android Apps With A Fake Message Of Force Close

Posted: 07 Jul 2012 09:30 AM PDT

Here, is a quick tutorial to protect Android apps with a fake "force close" message. You normally protect any app using some app to hide app on Android, or by Password protecting app hiding app it or protecting it with a password or pattern lock apps. But this time, we will discuss about a different way to protect your installed apps with a force close message.

Force close error message appears when any application does not responds. In those cases, either we have to restart the app or clear the cache from the "manage application" option in settings menu of your Android phone.

You can now protect the app with "App Locker II: Fake Crash" app. The app forces an error message of "force close" when anyone accesses your protected app installed on your Android phone. Whenever your friends or anyone else access the protected app, he/she will see the error message as "force close". With this your friend might think that there must be some problem with app and cannot be launched on your Android phone. This discourages them to try to find password or pattern lock and saves your installed app from being accessed by anyone.

Steps To Setup And Use App Locker II: Fake Crash App:

Step 1: Download and install "App Locker II: Fake Crash" App on your Android phone.

Step 2: Launch the app.

Step 3: You will see the list of apps installed on your Android phone.

App Locker II

Step 4: Tap on the options menu and then tap on settings of the app.

Step 5: Enable "App Locker" option and then select the unlock or dismiss mode.

App Locker II Settings

Step 6: Exit from settings menu and then select the apps which you want to protect.

Step 7: Now you will see the protected apps showing the error message of "force close".

Fake Crash Force Close

To access the protected apps, you need to follow the unlock mode which you selected. I recommend you to protect App Locker II: Fake Crash app too. This is because, no one can access and change the protection settings from App Locker II: Fake Crash app.

Improve your Vocabulary with Brainy

Posted: 07 Jul 2012 06:30 AM PDT

Brainy is a free program which will help you learn and understand words better, in other words, pun intended, the program will help you expand your vocabulary and make you more knowledgeable, hence the name, Brainy. The application works with the famous Barron’s 3500 SAT word list which should help you score more points on the SAT tests.

Brainy default window

Title of this vocabulary practice application tells us the same thing what we already mentioned, Barron 3500. Even though a lot of people are saying that the Baron 3500 world list is not enough in order to score the highest amounts of points on SATs, it’s definitely a good place to start. There are two ways of how you can use Brainy, one is in the Learn Mode where words are presented with an explanation already written, and the second is the Testing Mode where you can test your new expanded vocabulary.

Installation of Brainy vocabulary training utility

In order to run Brainy, at least under Windows, you’re gonna have to install this, warning direct download link. Visual C++ Redistribute is necessary, if you don’t already have it installed because otherwise you will be receiving errors that DLL files are not present.

Another thing that’s needed would be Java, since this is an application written in Java. Java makes it possible for Brainy to work in Windows, Mac, Linux and pretty much every other OS that supports Java. Make sure to have both of these installed before you start Brainy.

Expand you vocabulary with Brainy

Before you can start taking vocabulary tests, you first have to study, that’s why with Brainy there’s an option where you can learn words. Vocabulary word list that is used by default would be Baron 3500, but the great thing is that you can import your own list by clicking on the gears icon in the top left corner, then File and then Import wordlist:

Brainy wordlist learning

On the image above you can also see the Learning mode in action. First you only get the word, at the top of the document, the word that was showed to us above is “abase”. After you give a few seconds of thought, and perhaps even answer what the word would mean, or if you just wanna give up, you can click on a Show answer button which will reveal the answer like it is revealed on the image above. After you learn enough words it’s time to move to tests.

Test vocabulary skills with Brainy

The test portion of the program can be accessed from the top right corner, it’s the icon from which the arrow is pointing on the image below:

Brainy learning mode

Clicking there will activate a small window where you’ll be asked how many words you want the test to ask you, enter a number there, click OK and the fun and games can begin. Brainy is a great way of how you can either learn new words, or perhaps just brush up your vocabulary skills. For whatever you may need it, Brainy is there, and it’s free of charge.
